Do you know what happens when you ask for a band-aid in an airport? It’s an easy question, and one that should have a simple answer. But let me tell you what happened when I asked it at the Seattle airport.

A few years ago my Grandmother decided that while she wanted to go visit family for the holidays, she would only go if I flew with her. No problem, I love Mamaw and was going anyways. When we landed in Seattle things were crazy getting off of the plane and Mamaw ended up falling in the jet way. She was fine, but she skinned up the palm of her hand pretty badly.

We covered it with a napkin and made our way to the bathroom. By the time we got to the sink blood was dripping down into the water. The wound was shallow, just the top layer of skin, but it covered most of the lower part of her palm. It quickly became apparent that we would need some kind of bandage before we could get back on another plane.

So I went to the ticketing counter and asked where I could find a band-aid or a first aid station. They told me that there wasn’t one and that as I was obviously find I would just have to find a way to make it work. This made me angry. I replied quite loudly that it was not for me, it was for my 80-year-old grandmother and that we needed some help.

This got their attention.

The next thing that I knew we had not only a band-aid, but we had four firemen there to apply it. Plus the firemen were really nice. They cleaned everything up and even gave use some extra bandages to get us through the rest of the trip. My grandmother (who does not like to be the center of attention) was not happy with me, but there was nothing else that I could do! To this day she tells everyone not to ask me for a band-aid, because I bring back an entire brigade of firemen instead.
