christmas vacation, sleeping, family, children

One weekend, in an effort to escape the long hours of being a freelance writer, I traveled twenty minutes away to stay at my parents’ house. My sister, eager to share news of her second pregnancy, had also come into town. With our combined 3 children, all under the age of six, we dove into what would be another fun and relaxing two days of eating and chatting. Friday night, as usual, we stayed up late watching movies from our youth. I never get tired of Chevy Chase in his “vacation” comedies. As I type, I have a clear picture of him with white dress shoes and overly tan features. I am sure there are plenty of people out there who, like my family, look forward to Christmas Vacation like others look forward to eggnog or sugar cookies. It is our tradition and we treasure the laughs. This night was no different. We watched the movie as long as we could and laughed in sync to the same pranks and goofs that had hooked us twenty years ago. At about midnight, we both were asleep. She was in my... read more >>

college, england, london, train, sleeping, snoring

My freshman year of college took me overseas to England. I had never been away from home before alone, to another city or state, much less to another country. Here I was, 18 years old, leaving home for the first time, going on a plane for the first time, excited to be legal to drink alcohol en route "across the pond." I talked to my first New Zealander whom I couldn't understand although he spoke English. I expected the clouds and the grass to somehow be different, but they weren't. But it didn't stop me from taking pictures with my first camera.

I rode the London underground tube for the first time. Nearly lost my luggage en route to King's Cross in London for the first time. Rode my first train. Of course, I sat by some cute businessmen, and a beautiful lady; and for the first time since my trip began, I fell asleep. When I woke up, the men were gone. The beautiful lady and those sitting next to her were smiling.

I knew it instantly. Here I was on my first passenger train, snoring away like a freight train with my mouth hanging open (which I knew because... read more >>

travel agent, airport, sleeping, missed flight

I got a phone call from a client who was frantic to get home. I was a reservations agent for 6 years and in the travel and tourism industry for a total of 17 years, so I had grown very accustomed to clients calling in a panic. This particular client had purchased an airline ticket from us to fly roundtrip from Washington, D.C., to Buffalo, New York and back. He was however, calling from Toronto, Canada. At the time, I worked as a government agent – responsible for making official travel arrangements for travelers on official government business for the Federal Government. I asked my traveler why he was calling me from Toronto. The flight he was traveling on was a "direct" flight which meant the flight made a stop en route to its final destination. His flight was a flight terminating in Canada and only stopping in Buffalo to let passengers off and on. He should have gotten off in Buffalo. Apparently, according to my passenger, he had taken a valium pill because of his dislike for flying and had SLEPT through the layover in Buffalo. When he awoke, the plane was in Canada. I asked him how... read more >>
